If you are not sure, select the number of people in your household to get an estimated amount of the electricity you might need.
How to estimate your electricity consumption
If you do not know exactly how much electricity you use, you can use the following averages as a guide:
- 1 person: 1,500 kWh
- 2 persons: 2,500 kWh
- 3 persons: 3,500 kWh
- 4 persons: 4,250 kWh

We not only show you the price per kilowatt hour and the standing charge, but the estimated monthly instalment based on the consumption data you entered. Savings based on the local electricity supplier in your area are shown as standard. If this does not apply to you, you can select your current supplier with just a few clicks and see how much you could save.
To help you understand and customise our electricity comparison tool, we are going toexplain the main elements and options.
Understand and customise your results
The monthly instalment we calculated for your household may differentiate after you have signed up with your new supplier and their offer has been verified. You will also get the ability to adjust the monthly instalment after you have signed up with the supplier of you choice. If the instalment is higher than expected, you should contact your supplier. They will be able to explain why the monthly instalment is higher than first expected. In some regions, only ten or eleven instalments are required per year, which is why the instalment rate we distribute over twelve months is higher.
Please also consider that a slightly higher instalment can protect you from unexpectedly high additional payment. As already mentioned, you can adjust your instalment at any time. For example, if you read your electricity meter after several months and find that your consumption differs significantly from the numbers provided at the start of the contract.
You can use various filters to refine the results to suit your needs. Please note that we will show or hide tariffs based on the settings you make. You can choose from the following filters in our electricity price comparison tool:
- Price view: You can choose to view prices monthly or annually. The monthly view divides the annual price into 12 equal parts to show the estimated monthly cost per tariff.
- Contract length in months: This filter lets you choose how long you want to be tied to a supplier. You can choose from the standard 12 months, just 3 or 6 months, or longer minimum durations contracts of 24 months.
- Price guarantee in months: If you want your future electricity supplier to offer the longest possible price guarantee, use this slider to set the guarantee from at least 3 to at least 24 months.
- Green and climate tariffs: You can choose whether to receive electricity from conventional but environmentally harmful providers or nuclear resources. If you would like to opt for green electricity you will have to choose the "eco" option. If you select "ecoplus," the provider is will not be significantly involved in nuclear or coal power plants and actively promotes the expansion of renewable energy sources.
- Include a bonus: Many tariffs come with a new customer bonus or instant bonus when you sign up. Bonuses not only vary in size, but also in when they are paid out. Some are added to your account straight away, while others are included in your annual bill. You can choose to show all bonuses on the estimated cost, hide them or show only some.
- High customer referral rate: Activate this filter to show only tariffs with the best customer reviews.
- Regional suppliers only: Select this option to only show tariffs from regional suppliers.
The electricity price comparison tool not only allows you to compare numerous providers and their offers at a glance with just a few clicks and choose the cheapest option, but also provides additional bonuses that you wouldn't get directly from the provider. This often makes switching electricity providers through us cheaper than going directly through the provider.
You can check out reviews of different tariffs from customers who have already signed up for the same tariff through Verivox. This will give you a good overview of the supplier and honest feedback from usually more than hundreds of people.
The most important things to know when choosing a new electricity tariff
Our electricity price comparison tool contains terms like price guarantee, new customer bonus and sustainable, green electricity. We are going to tell you what they mean below.
- Contract length: Tariff contracts are usually signed for 12 or 24 months. The shorter the length, the more flexibility you have. If you compare electricity prices often and want to quickly take advantage of cheaper deals, choose a shorter length. You can cancel at any time with up to four weeks' notice after the minimum period and switch to a different provider again if you want.
- Price guarantee: Electricity tariffs with a price guarantee fix the agreed prices for a specific time period, providing you with cost certainty. Such guarantees typically last for one year. However, often electricity providers only offer a limited price guarantee, which applies to the energy costs and network usage charges.
"Despite a price guarantee, prices may be adjusted due to changes in levies, taxes, and surcharges. Only a complete price guarantee covers such costs. Increases in value-added tax and electricity tax may still be passed on to customers.
- New customer bonus: A new customer bonus is a bonus that you will get just once after you successfully switch your supplier. In most cases, the bonus is credited to your first annual bill.
- Instant bonus: You receive an instant bonus within 60 days from the start date of your new electricity supply, which is sooner than the new customer bonus.
- Green electricity: With us, you can decide whether to receive electricity from conventional, environmentally harmful, or nuclear resources. Other than that, you can also opt for green electricity which is generated from solar, wind, or hydroelectric power. All of those produce no CO2 emissions during production. Furthermore, choosing green electricity doesn't necessarily incur higher costs compared to conventional household electricity
Green electricity is guaranteed by certificates and checks by the technical inspection associations (TÜV) and quality labels like 'ok-power' and 'Grüner Strom'. There are two types of green electricity: 'Öko' electricity guarantees green power from certified sources. 'Ökoplus' goes a step further: not only is the electricity green, but the supplier does not get their electricity from nuclear or coal power stations and actively helps to develop renewable energy.
- Regional suppliers: In our electricity price comparison, you can specifically filter for providers based in your region. By choosing a tariff from a local provider compared to nationwide operators, you also support the local energy transition. Many local providers actively promote the expansion of renewable energies by investing in projects such as solar and wind farms.
Essential details for switching providers
Once you have browsed at your leisure and chosen a tariff that suits you, you can book the offer directly through our electricity comparison tool in just a few minutes. Beforehand, we will display all details about the provider, their tariff, the conditions, and the estimated costs.
To ensure a smooth switch, we require some personal information from you, including your email address, the address of the household to be supplied, and your date of birth. You will also need to select a payment method. The options are direct debit or bank transfer. If you choose direct debit, you will have to provide your IBAN and authorise the process.
In our electricity price comparison tool, you will also need to specify whether you are switching suppliers or seeking a new electricity contract due to a change of residence. The following connection details will help you make a successful and hassle-free switch:
- Previous supplier
- Customer number
- Meter number
Finding your meter and customer numbers
You can find your previous supplier's meter and customer numbers on your last annual bill.
You can also specify whether the new electricity supplier should terminate your current contract, if you prefer to handle the termination yourself, or if you have already terminated it. In most cases, leaving the termination to the new provider ensures a seamless transition. Additionally, our electricity comparison tool allows you to choose whether you want to switch at the earliest possible opportunity or on a specific date.
Before completing your order, we will provide you with a summary listing all details about your future electricity supplier and the information you have entered (personal details, banking information, and connection details). Switch with confidence with legally guaranteed supply
Switching electricity supplier usually takes between three and six weeks. Sometimes there may be delays and it might take a little longer. During this period, you will continue to get your electricity supply from your previous supplier, thanks to Germany's legally regulated electricity supply guarantee.
Cancelling your existing contract
You want to cancel your contract with your current electricity supplier? If you are on a standard tariff, you can switch with two weeks' notice. For non-standard tariffs, the minimum contract length and notice period that were agreed at the time of signing up apply.
When switching using our electricity price comparison tool, you can choose whether to handle the termination yourself or authorize your new provider to terminate on your behalf. The latter option is convenient and requires only minimal information from you, such as specifying your current provider and meter number.
You will need to cancel your electricity contract yourself in the following situations:
- Your electricity provider has announced an increase in electricity prices, and you wish to exercise your right to special termination.
- You have moved and want to change your electricity provider.
- Your notice period expires in less than four weeks.
You can terminate your contract online through the electricity provider's website in your customer account or by using the cancellation button directly on the main page. Alternatively, you can also send an informal message via email or traditional mail with the necessary details (including name, address, meter number, and reason for termination).
Consumer-friendly terms and conditions
To help you choose the right tariff and make it easier to compare, our electricity comparison tool uses the Verivox Recommendations filter setting by default.
This means that only tariffs that meet certain consumer protection criteria and that we consider to be fair contract terms are displayed. These include features like:
- Limited contract length
- Short notice periods
- (Limited) price guarantees
- No electricity tariffs with electricity bundles, prepayments or deposits
It is important to us that the minimum contract duration is no more than 12 months, with a notice period of not more than one month thereafter. Additionally, the tariffs include a price guarantee that applies at least for the initial contract period and covers all components except for government taxes, levies, and surcharges.
Everyday energy saving tips
You can not only reduce electricity costs using our electricity price comparison tool but also through energy-efficient behaviors in your daily life. Many of the following tips can collectively lead to significant annual savings:
- Check the temperature in your fridge and freezer and set them to 7 degrees Celsius and -18 degrees Celsius respectively.
- Defrost your freezer once or twice a year if there is a layer of ice.
- Avoid preheating the oven and use the convection function if available.
- Use lids on pots and pans when cooking.
- Use the economy programmes with lower temperatures on your dishwasher and washing machine.
- Only start washing or dishwashing when the machines are as full as possible.
- If you heat water using electricity, it's even more worthwhile to use hot water sparingly. Use a water-saving showerhead in the shower and turn off the water while soaping up.
- If you have an instant hot water heater, do not set the temperature too high.
- Turn off the lights and appliances when you leave a room.
- Planning to be away for a while? Unplug all your electrical appliances like TVs, computers, routers and coffee machines.
If your electronic appliances such as refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, or television are over 10 years old, it may be worthwhile to consider purchasing newer ones that have significantly lower electricity consumption. Investing in new appliances can pay off within a few years and subsequently save you money each month due to their lower energy consumption. You might also consider selling the replaced old appliance on the used market for a small amount.
Replacing old light bulbs with modern LED lamps is quick and only requires a small investment. Where 40 or 60 watts was were normal before, 4 to 8 watts is are now more than enough now.
